Group definition

Group members: Kayla Edgar, Kelli Gemmer, Anais Tamayo, and Rachel Cohen

Our group's definition:
Rhetoric, or "knowledge-making", is written and spoken word requiring exigence, audience, and constraints. The rhetor's message is directed towards an audience, or "special interest group" and attempts to evoke a feeling, idea, or change in the auditors' minds. Rhetoric is also meant to persuade the listener[s].

  1. Did you mean Rachel Cushanick? I think I was in your group and Rachel Cohen was in a different group.

  2. This definition is different from my group's in that we did not mention the three elements of the rhetorical situation. Instead, we focused more on the structure of the rhetor's language and how it influences an audience.

  3. This definition differs from the one that my group came up with, because we did not mention exigence, audience, or constraints. My group's definition focused more on rhetoric using carefully crafted words in order to persuade an audience using valid facts and arguments.

  4. This definition differs from the one my group came up with because it is very specific. It uses the three terms exigence, audience and constraints which are all part of a rhetoric situation as stated by the articles we read the past two weeks. However, it is similar to my group's definition because it talks about the effect the rhetoric has on an audience and how the author wants to provoke certain feelings out of an audience and uses certain language to bring these feelings out in an audience.

  5. This definition is similar to the one that my group came up with, just worded a little differently and much more specific. My group did not define rhetoric in all the way possible, because rhetoric can mean many different things. I think the definition here is a very good one, using terms from our readings to help explain what rhetoric consists of. I agree that rhetoric is used to persuade a specific audience to think a certain way about something. I also think rhetoric can be used to persuade an audience toward some kind of action. All in all, I think this definition is a good way to define rhetoric.

  6. This definitions differs from my group in the sense that we didn't include the three elements, but I like that your group included them - it gives the definition more weight.
