Is Google Making Me Stupid?

No.

At worst, Google is Apple's worst nightmare, but in no way I believe Google has any negative correlation with my intelligence.

If anything, Google centralizes how I work.  Some features like GMail and Blogger and Maps are nicer solutions, while other features like Scholar and Picasa and Reader are at best niche items.  Rather than having to buy a map book every year from the bookstore, here's Google Maps showing me how to go. If there's something in Spanish I need to translate, Google can translate it for me.

While it could be true that the above can attribute to laziness, I say otherwise - it's not laziness or stupidity.  It's productivity.  Have we checked our mail? uploaded new pictures? read the news? (Checked Google+?) Well, then let's have something else to do.  Just because the old way is the usually established way, that does not make it the only way.  For example, a lot of other people log in to MyFSU the old, logging in on a browser way.  Instead, I just open Microsoft Outlook and ding I got new mail.

If anything, Google gives me a lot of choices.  Although, if anything, Bing might make me stupid - with all their suggestions and all the link-directing and no more thinking on my side.

  1. I also agree that Google does not negatively affect my intelligence. I definitely agree that Google improves productivity and is definitely very convenient and useful.

  2. While Google may bring about many new applications that are cool and time-saving, it does not help with the reading of masterpieces of literature. Due to Google and the Internet's "shortcuts", the attention span of the reading populace has shrunk from 500 pages to 5.

  3. I certainly agree on the bing issue. It seems to be Google dumbed down. I also agree that Google has made things a whole lot easier and convenient.
