First experience:
Mally: My first experience with a computer was at school. They took my entire class to a computer lab and were teaching us how to turn them on and off, how to type with them, etc.
Sophie: I had a computer at home, so I would always play games on it. My dad would have to ground me from it for hours because I'd spend too long playing.
Megan: My mom works in computer science, so I grew up watching her typing on the computer, and working with it.
First Computer:
Mally: My first computer was a Compaq laptop my dad gave me my freshman year of high school. I was begging for one because we'd all just been sharing the same HP desktop computer for about ten years at that point, and it basically couldn't function anymore.
Sophie: My parents gave me a Dell laptop my sophomore year of high school. Our family computer wasn't really working well anymore, and it was hurting my school work.
Megan: I got a Gateway desktop computer in the 8th grade. I don't remember asking or anything, I just remember having it in my room one day.
Positive Instance:
Mally: In the 5th grade I left my science fair project for last minute, and wasn't really used to using the computer for research just yet. The library was closed and I didn't have any books with which to research. I went on the computer and was able to find everything I needed right there. I turned in my project the next day and ended up with a good grade.
Sophie: It affected me positively when I was waiting to get accepted into FSU. The mail acceptance letter took a lot longer to arrive, but I was able to get on the internet and find out right away whether I was in or not.
Megan: They helped me when I was looking for directions. My job sent me to a store the other day and I had no idea where it was. I just went on the internet and looked it up.
Negative Instance:
Mally: In middle school, I would come home everyday and lock myself in the room with the computer. I'd go on Myspace, chat on AIM, and basically isolate myself from the rest of the house. My parents were getting really mad, and my grades started to suffer, so I ended up getting limited time on the computer.
Sophie: My very first week of college, my Dell randomly broke down on me. I didn't have anything due, but I had to make do without a laptop for the rest of the semester. It was terrible.
Megan: I waited until the last minute to write a paper for one of my classes. Right when I finished and was about to submit through SafeAssign, I spilled juice on my keyboard. I ended up having to rewrite the entire thing and turn it in late.
Parts of the Computer:
Mally: Screen, keyboard, power button, track pad, RAM, fan, motherboard, speakers, ports
Sophie: screen, fan, motherboard, battery, RAM, ports
Megan: CPU, monitor, hard drive, screen, keyboard, disk drive
Back-up Solution?
Mally: No, but I really probably should. I would miss everything if something were to happen to my computer.
Sophie: My iTunes library and I e-mail important documents to myself, but I were to miss a lot of documents.
Megan: My documents are backed up with Norton Anti-Virus, but my music and pictures aren't, so I'd miss that.
Activities not on the Internet?
Mally: I use photobooth on my computer, and edit pictures.
Sophie: I have a Kindle application on my computer that I use from time to time, but I have to download the books from the internet.
Megan: I listen to music, upload pictures, and watch DVDs.
