I've been using Google for a fair amount of time. It has a lot of resources, and its quick and easy to use. I am still able to sit down and read long articles, papers, books, etc. Part of the reason for getting distracted and side tracked on Google is that the internet is distracting in the first place. Simply looking up a birth date on Wikipedia could lead to hours of mindless article jumping through links. While I have used Google to look up information, I still prefer databases through the university website or going to the library. So, I would not say that Google has made me stupid. I probably do better in school now than I did before I had computer access. It does take effort, though, to remain focused and on track while using Google or the internet in general.

I completely agree with the article jumping thing - the internet is extremely distracting. There are so many articles out there.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's not google that's distracting, it's all of the internet. I have tabs on my internet window for websites I visit a lot like facebook, youtube, and email so I'll be reading a bland article and see the tabs on my page and open a new tab. But databases like Jstor are much better than google, they're a lot more reliable.
