I feel that Google has both positive and negative consequences. For the casual searcher looking for good Italian food, the search engine is perfect for his or her needs. It has the ability to weed out the plethora of information available online and help the searcher find the appropriate link in seconds. It offers alternatives, shows a preview of the site and is simple to use. The drawback, however, is visible. The want that the current generation of college students read and work is completely different from students ten years prior. We have much shorter attention spans and can't seem to make it through one well-written book. The amount of time and energy necessary to comprehend material longer than 3 pages is just too much for a student accustomed to information in seconds and a summary of the knowledge they need. In conclusion, I feel that while Google has broadened our horizons, it has shortened our ability to enjoy them.

It's hard to comprehend how much more work our parents may have had to do when they were in college. I feel lucky that I have Google and the internet in general, but I also feel a little guilty and ashamed about how dependent I am on them.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Rachel's point that Google weeds out the infinite sites of information that are useless to us. I sometimes will conduct a search and go through pages and pages of useless information until I find the one link that actually has what I am looking for. Especially on sites such as Wikepedia, it is sometimes hard to find accurate information. I do agree that we are lucky to be able to complete our work more accurately than the generations before and think we are also learning more because of the availability of information we have.

I agree with you that it's making it more difficult to pay attention to a good book. And I don't know about you, but I've noticed that I don't read as much as I did before I started using the internet. Half the time, I waste away my free time on the internet, and the other half, I just get too distracted and get tired of reading after the first couple of chapters. Not to mention, I don't have to use books from a library to do my research anymore, and I can't tell you the last time I actually used a dictionary with pages and a spine instead of just typing the word into Google.
